Looking for Italian lake alternatives to Lake Como?

I am planning a trip to Italy and everyone keeps suggesting Lake Como, but I am looking for something a bit less crowded and more tranquil. I really enjoy scenic hiking, local food, and charming small towns, but I want to avoid the heavy tourist traps. Does anyone have recommendations for other beautiful lakes in Italy that are worth visiting for a few days? I would love to hear your personal experiences or hidden gems that offer a great atmosphere.

Lake Orta is the absolute best alternative. It’s incredibly peaceful, the town of Orta San Giulio is like a fairytale, and it lacks the massive crowds of Como. It’s perfect for a quiet getaway.

If you want stunning mountains and hiking, look into Lake Molveno in the Dolomites. It’s crystal clear and surrounded by incredible trails. It's often featured in guides for European summer spots, but it still feels like a local secret.

I highly recommend Lake Iseo. It’s much more authentic and less pretentious than Como. The island in the middle, Monte Isola, is car-free and wonderful to cycle around.

Try Lake Ledro near Lake Garda. It’s much smaller, way quieter, and the water is turquoise and clean enough to swim in. Very charming vibe.

Lake Braies is beautiful, though it can get busy during the day. If you go early in the morning, the tranquility is unmatched. The hiking trails nearby are world-class.

Consider Lake Bolsena in the Lazio region. It’s volcanic, the water is warm, and the surrounding towns have a very slow, authentic pace of life that you just won't find in the north.

Lake Resia is fascinating because of the sunken bell tower, but the surrounding area is perfect for hikers who want rugged scenery without the influencer crowds.

Honestly, skip the big lakes and head to the smaller ones in the Trentino region. They are perfect for shoulder season travel when you want to avoid the heat and the masses.

Lake Tenno is a tiny, stunning emerald lake. It’s very small, so maybe not for a whole week, but as a base for hiking, it’s unbeatable and so quiet.

Have you looked at Lake Mergozzo? It’s basically a tiny, quieter neighbor to Lake Maggiore. It has a very laid-back atmosphere and excellent local restaurants.
