Seeking recommendations: Best places to stay in the Black Forest, Germany

My family and I are planning a trip to the Black Forest in Germany for the first time this summer. We're looking for recommendations on the best areas or specific towns to base ourselves for a week-long stay. We're interested in a mix of scenic beauty, hiking opportunities, charming villages, and perhaps some family-friendly activities. We'd love to hear from those who have visited about their favorite accommodations, whether it's a cozy guesthouse, a well-located hotel, or even a private rental. What are your top picks and why?

We absolutely loved staying in Titisee-Neustadt! The lake is stunning, and there are so many boat rentals and family activities. Hiking trails are abundant, and the town itself is very picturesque. We stayed at a lovely family-run hotel right by the lake. Highly recommend it for a first-time visit.

Freiburg im Breisgau is a fantastic base. It's a vibrant city with a beautiful old town, a famous Münster, and great transport links for day trips. From there, you can easily explore the surrounding Black Forest. We found some great apartment rentals on Airbnb.

For a truly charming experience, consider Gengenbach. It's one of the most well-preserved medieval towns and feels like stepping back in time. The surrounding vineyards are beautiful for walks. We stayed in a quaint Pension and it was perfect.

Triberg is famous for its waterfalls, which are impressive! It's a bit more touristy, but the sheer scale of the falls and the cuckoo clock shops make it a fun stop. We stayed in a hotel within walking distance of the falls and enjoyed the convenience.

Schluchsee is another beautiful lake town, similar to Titisee but perhaps a bit quieter. Great for water sports and surrounded by forests for hiking. We rented a holiday home there and it was ideal for our family.

If you're looking for a more secluded and nature-focused experience, look into the area around Baiersbronn. It's known as a 'gourmet village' but also offers incredible hiking. We stayed in a small guesthouse and felt immersed in nature.

Don't underestimate the smaller villages! We stayed in Hinterzarten, which is charming and has excellent access to hiking and cross-country skiing (though you're going in summer). It's less crowded than Titisee but still has amenities.

We found staying near Baden-Baden to be a good option. It's a bit more upscale with its famous spas, but the surrounding Black Forest hills offer fantastic walks, and it's a good base for exploring the northern parts of the region.

For families, the Europa-Park area (Rust) might be worth considering if theme parks are a big draw. It's not *in* the heart of the Black Forest, but it's a major attraction and you can do day trips from there. Just be aware it's very commercial.

We opted for a farm stay (Urlaub auf dem Bauernhof) near St. Peter. It was an amazing experience for the kids, getting to see farm animals and enjoying the peaceful countryside. Great hiking right from the doorstep.

Consider Todtnau. It's in a more mountainous part of the Black Forest, offering stunning views and more challenging hikes. They have a summer toboggan run which is a blast for families! We found a comfortable hotel there.
