Looking for hidden gems: Beyond Lisbon and Porto

I am planning my third trip to Portugal and I really want to avoid the typical tourist crowds in the Algarve and the major cities. Does anyone have recommendations for authentic, off-the-beaten-path villages or regions that still offer a local feel? I am particularly interested in places with great hiking trails or unique historical sites that aren't mentioned in every guidebook. Any hidden gems you've discovered lately would be greatly appreciated!

You should definitely check out the Schist Villages (Aldeias do Xisto) in the Lousã mountains. The hiking trails there are incredible and it feels like stepping back in time.

Marvão is a stunning walled village near the Spanish border. It’s perched high on a cliff and offers some of the best views in the country without the massive tour bus crowds.

If you love hiking, the Serra da Estrela is fantastic, but head to the smaller villages like Sabugueiro rather than staying in the main tourist hubs.

Monsanto is a unique village where houses are built into giant boulders. It’s a bit of a trek to get there, but it is one of the most historical sites I have ever visited in Portugal.

Consider visiting the Alentejo interior. Places like Mértola have rich Moorish history and are very quiet, making it perfect for a peaceful getaway.

I recently traveled through several countries and was wondering is the Interrail pass actually worth it for adults in their 30s? for exploring these rural areas since trains can be limited in the interior.

Peneda-Gerês National Park is well-known, but if you hike deeper into the park toward the village of Lindoso, you'll find ancient granaries and zero crowds.

The village of Castelo de Vide is charming and very authentic. It has a beautiful Jewish quarter and is much more relaxed than anything you'd find near Lisbon.

Don't overlook the Douro Valley, but skip the main river cruise towns. Rent a car and drive into the high-altitude vineyards around Provesende for a much more local experience.

If you work remotely, there are some top digital nomad hubs in Europe with fast wifi that are actually in smaller, quieter towns in the central region if you want to stay a while.

Tomar is great for history lovers because of the Convento de Cristo, but if you want something even quieter, try the nearby village of Dornes on the Zêzere River.

Try the Beira Baixa region. It is often completely ignored by international tourists and offers authentic food and very rugged, beautiful landscapes for trekking.

If you decide to cross the border into Spain during your trip, just make sure you aren't confused about Schengen visa requirements for a multi-country trip before you set off!
