I am planning a trip to Europe for late October and I am desperate to see some stunning fall colors. I have heard great things about the Bavarian Alps and the Black Forest, but I am looking for other hidden gems or perhaps some recommendations in Eastern Europe. Could you suggest a few spots that offer the best scenery for photography and hiking during the peak foliage season? Any advice on the best timing for these specific regions would also be greatly appreciated.

You absolutely must check out the High Tatras in Slovakia. Late October is perfect for that crisp air and the golden larches. It's a photographer's dream!

If you want something truly unique, head to the Transylvania region in Romania. The Carpathian Mountains are breathtaking in autumn. Just be sure to check out Eurail Pass vs. Point-to-Point Tickets options before you book your transport.

Slovenia is the hidden gem you're looking for. Lake Bled and the Triglav National Park are stunning, especially in the last two weeks of October.

Consider the Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. While everyone goes in summer, the fall colors reflecting off the waterfalls in late October are unmatched.

I spent last October in the Julian Alps. The hiking trails were empty and the foliage was incredible. Definitely worth the trip.

If you want to avoid the crowds of the Alps, try the Beskydy Mountains on the border of Czechia and Slovakia. It feels untouched.

Don't overlook the Dolomites in Italy. They are spectacular, and if you are looking for alternatives to the major lakes, you should definitely read about Italian lake alternatives to plan a quieter route.

For Eastern Europe, the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria offer some of the best hiking trails with vibrant red and orange hues in late October.

Late October is actually getting a bit late for the higher altitudes in the Alps, so focus on the valleys or lower regions like the Moselle Valley in Germany.

Transylvania is my top pick. The drive through the Transfăgărășan (if it's still open) is legendary for fall photography.

Try the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in Czechia. The sandstone formations combined with the autumn mist are perfect for moody landscape shots.

I highly recommend the Karkonosze range in Poland. The colors are vibrant and the hiking infrastructure is excellent for mid-to-late October.

The Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria are incredibly underrated. The foliage peaks around the third week of October and the local villages are charming.

Stick to the southern slopes of the Alps in late October; you'll get more sunshine and the gold of the beech trees really pops against the limestone.
