I am currently mapping out an itinerary for a multi-country trip across Europe and I am obsessed with medieval history and architecture. I want to prioritize visiting the most iconic and visually stunning historic castles, but there are just too many options to choose from. Could you recommend the top historic castles in Europe that are truly worth the trip for their historical significance and preservation? I would love to hear your personal favorites and any tips you might have for visiting them.

You absolutely cannot miss Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany! It’s the ultimate fairytale experience. While you're in the region, check out these best hiking trails in the Swiss Alps for beginners to add some adventure to your trip.

Mont Saint-Michel in France is breathtaking. The way the tide surrounds the abbey is something you have to see in person at least once.
Edinburgh Castle in Scotland is a must. The history embedded in the stone and the view over the city are unbeatable.

Don't skip Predjama Castle in Slovenia. It's built right into a cave mouth, which is just wild architecture.

The Alhambra in Granada, Spain, is essential. The Moorish architecture is unlike anything else you will find in Europe.

Windsor Castle is great, but for pure medieval vibes, I always recommend Warwick Castle. It feels so authentic and interactive.

Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley is a masterpiece of French Renaissance architecture. The double helix staircase is a highlight.

Hohenwerfen Castle in Austria has the most stunning mountain backdrop. Definitely worth the climb for the views alone.

Conwy Castle in Wales is my favorite. The town walls are still largely intact, and walking the ramparts makes you feel like you've traveled back in time.

Bran Castle in Romania is famous for the Dracula legend, but the structure itself is legitimately haunting and beautiful in its own right.
