First-time Ring Road trip: How many days do I actually need?

My partner and I are planning our first trip to Iceland next September and are set on driving the full Ring Road. We have heard conflicting advice on whether 7 days is enough or if we should aim for 10-12 to avoid feeling rushed. We are looking for advice on a realistic pace that allows us to see the major highlights without spending our entire vacation behind the steering wheel.

Seven days is technically possible, but you will spend 4-5 hours in the car every single day. If you want to actually hike and explore, I strongly recommend 10-12 days. It makes a huge difference in your stress levels.

12 days is the sweet spot. It allows you to build in a 'buffer day' in case the weather turns bad, which is very common in September. Don't rush it; the scenery is the point of the trip!

If you only have 7 days, skip the North and just do the South Coast and Snaefellsnes. You will enjoy the trip much more by going deeper into a few areas rather than just driving past them.
