Budget-friendly travel: Which Eastern European countries offer the best value?

I am currently planning a backpacking trip through Eastern Europe and am looking to stretch my budget as far as possible without sacrificing the experience. I have heard great things about places like Albania and Bulgaria, but I am curious if there are other hidden gems where accommodation and food costs remain low. Could anyone provide recommendations for the absolute cheapest countries to visit in the region for a two-week trip? Any tips on specific cities that are particularly affordable would be greatly appreciated.

North Macedonia is a hidden gem. Ohrid is stunning and way cheaper than anywhere in Western Europe. You can live like a king for 30 euros a day.

Romania is fantastic. Skip the tourist traps and head to Sibiu or Brașov. The food is hearty and cheap, and the scenery in the Carpathians is unbeatable.

If you want to stretch your budget, Montenegro is great, but stick to the northern mountains rather than just the coast if you want to save serious money.

Poland is still very affordable outside of Krakow. Try Wroclaw or Gdansk; they are beautiful, vibrant cities that won't break the bank.

Serbia is underrated. Belgrade has an amazing nightlife scene that is much cheaper than in other major European capitals.

Don't overlook Moldova. It's likely the cheapest country in the region, and Chisinau has some really unique wine tours that are surprisingly inexpensive.

Bulgaria is a solid choice. Plovdiv is one of my favorite cities in the world, and you can easily find a decent hostel for under 15 dollars.

For a two-week trip, I would suggest doing a loop through Albania and North Macedonia. Both are incredibly wallet-friendly and the bus travel is very cheap.

You might want to look into these underrated European destinations to see if any fit your itinerary. Kosovo is also super cheap and has very welcoming locals.

Hungary is great, but try to avoid Budapest for the whole trip. Debrecen or Szeged are much cheaper and have a more authentic feel.

Lithuania and the other Baltic states are also quite affordable if you stay in hostels and eat at local markets.

I did a two-week trip through Romania and Bulgaria last summer. I spent less than 600 euros total, including travel between cities.

Definitely prioritize Albania. The southern coast is getting popular, but if you head into the mountains or the smaller towns, your money will go incredibly far.
